About the Project
Geroldswil is one of those villages in the canton of Zurich that, despite their proximity to the city, have kept a quiet charm all their own. It was in exactly this setting that we were able to support a bathroom project that shows how much impact carefully chosen materials can have.
At its centre is the Phenomenon Air Nero ceramic mosaic by Mutina, designed by Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka. Each individual element of the collection is hand-pressed and assembled into a pattern reminiscent of honeycomb structures, icicles and plant cell structures – without directly imitating nature. The result is a wall surface with tangible depth that looks different depending on the light and gives the room a calm yet lively texture.
As both a contrast and a complement, a countertop basin in bronze by Morath was chosen – a handcrafted piece whose warm, metallic surface picks up the earthy tone of the mosaic wall while setting a sculptural accent of its own in the room. Combined with a Dornbracht tap, the result is a cohesive interplay of material, form and function.
The project was designed by Hügi Architekten AG Zurich, and the on-site installation was carried out by Hänni AG. It is precisely this collaboration between considered planning, careful execution and the right choice of materials that turns a bathroom into a place with character.
„Mutina turns ceramics into design: surfaces created with leading designers, where craftsmanship, colour and texture become tiles that are part of the architecture.“
