Ein kulturelles Erbe, gefaltet in Keramik

Die Wurzeln von Folded reichen zurück in die Kindheit der Designer:innen. Yael Mer und Shay Alkalay – das Duo hinter dem Londoner Studio Raw Edges – wuchsen in Tel Aviv auf. Dort begegnete man in fast jeder Wohnung den gleichen geometrischen Bodenfliesen: zurückhaltend, aber rhythmisch. Wiederholung als visuelle Ruhe. Diese Erinnerung wurde für sie zur Basis: Wie lassen sich diese stillen Muster in zeitgemäßes Design übersetzen?

Die Antwort war: Falten. Aber nicht als Ornament, sondern als Struktur. Papier wurde gefaltet, die Falten abgeformt, in Porzellansteinzeug gegossen – und so entstand eine Oberfläche, die wie Stoff wirkt, sich aber wie Stein benimmt.

Raw Edges: Experiment als Methode

Raw Edges sind bekannt für ihre materialorientierte Forschung. Yael bringt ein Gespür für Form, Textur und Erzählung mit, Shay einen funktionalen Blick auf Bewegung, Mechanik und Nutzung. Zusammen entwickeln sie Objekte, die nie rein dekorativ sind – sondern interaktiv, zugänglich und oft mit einem Augenzwinkern.

Die Zusammenarbeit mit Mutina begann 2010 und umfasst heute mehrere Serien. Folded ist dabei eines ihrer poetischsten Projekte – eine Fliese, die wie ein stiller Gedanke im Raum steht.

Materialität: Origami als Architektur

Was aus der Distanz reduziert wirkt, zeigt aus der Nähe enorme Tiefe: feine Knicke, klare Linien, subtile Schattenspiele. Die Falten wurden real mit Papier erzeugt und dann in das keramische Format übertragen. So wirkt jede Platte wie eine zufällige Skulptur, die sich über Licht definiert.

Dabei ist Folded kein empfindliches Objekt. Die Fliese besteht aus durchgefärbtem, unglasiertem Feinsteinzeug – frostfest, robust, trittsicher, und langlebig. Es ist eine ehrliche Oberfläche: nicht bedruckt, nicht beschichtet – sondern direkt geformt. Reduktion als Raffinesse.

In drei Reliefvarianten (Mini, Mid, Maxi) erhältlich, ermöglicht Folded eine Vielzahl rhythmischer Verlegungen – je nach Licht entsteht immer wieder ein neues Bild.
